Why WePlant

Everyday over 24,000 people die of hunger and malnutrition related issues globally. This translates to 9 million deaths in a year worldwide.

We are confident that this global crisis will end in our lifetime. Everyone will have access to fruits season after season. It is necessary and its possible.

Together, we are determined to turn the tide and put an end to this devastating global crisis. By planting fruit trees in public spaces, we envision a future where everyone can access nutritious fruits season after season. This vision is not just aspirational; it is achievable. With united efforts and unwavering dedication, we can make a profound difference in the lives of millions.

Here are some key statistics on hunger and malnutrition in India as of 2021:

Undernourishment: According to the FAO, approximately 189.2 million people in India were undernourished in 2020.

Malnutrition among Children: India has a high burden of child malnutrition. As of 2021, the prevalence of stunting (low height for age) among children under five years old was around 34.7%, and the prevalence of wasting (low weight for height) was about 17.3%. The prevalence of underweight (low weight for age) was approximately 33.4%.

Micronutrient Deficiencies: India also faces challenges related to micronutrient deficiencies. Anemia, for instance, remains a significant public health concern among women and children.

Food Insecurity: Food insecurity is prevalent in many parts of the country. In 2020, it was estimated that about 22% of India's population experienced moderate or severe food insecurity.

Poverty and Hunger: Hunger is often linked to poverty. India is home to a large number of people living below the poverty line, and this can contribute to the prevalence of hunger and malnutrition.

In India, where hunger and malnutrition persist as pressing challenges, we recognize the urgency to act. The statistics show the gravity of the situation, but they also serve as a call to action. We must channel our energies into innovative solutions, mobilize resources, and inspire others to join our cause.

Our commitment goes beyond mere promises; it is rooted in the belief that no one should suffer from hunger and malnutrition. As we address the complex issues surrounding food insecurity, we also address the larger socio-economic factors that perpetuate this crisis. We work hand in hand with communities, governments, and organizations to create sustainable change.

One fruit tree may seem like a small contribution, but its impact extends far beyond its branches. It represents hope, sustenance, and resilience for generations to come. Each tree planted brings us closer to a world where hunger and malnutrition are a thing of the past.

With every seed sown and every fruit harvested, we move one step closer to achieving our vision. Let us unite, driven by compassion and determination, to make this vision a reality. Together, we can nourish lives, transform communities, and end hunger and malnutrition once and for all.

Join us at WePlant, and together, let's sow the seeds of change and cultivate a future where hunger is history, and everyone can enjoy the bountiful harvest of a nutritious world.
